Invitation to the “Virtues of the game of chess: academic success and social inclusion” seminar
A seminar entitled “The virtues of the game of chess: academic success and social inclusion”, organised by MPs Marc Loewenstein and Joëlle Maison, in collaboration with the Centre d’études Jacques Georgin.
The seminar will be held on Thursday 12 October 2023 at 6.30pm at the Brussels Parliament.
As you know, playing chess helps you to concentrate better, to (re)gain self-confidence, to maintain social links, to put things into perspective and to hang on, to escape from our inner prisons and to meet players from different backgrounds.
It’s time to take stock of the benefits of this game and try to identify ways of developing its practice.
- In the first part, Frédéric Bielik (facilitator, trainer, coach at “Chess Building”, vice-president of the Fédération Échiquéenne Francophone Belge (FEFB)), Iris Descamps (social worker, EVRAS facilitator at a family planning centre, representative of female players at the FEFB), and 3 young players (Nina, Souleymane and Harris) will share their experiences in the school environment.
- In the second part, Yolaine Lhoist (a special needs teacher who incorporates chess into every classroom), Astrid Barbier (a female chess master and educator), and Marie Bourcy (Director of Alzheimer Belgium) will discuss the practice of chess by people suffering from certain mental disorders.
- A question and answer session will be held at the end of the conference. It will be followed by a cocktail reception.
The event is, of course, open to the public and we would be delighted to have you join us so that everyone’s experiences can be shared and inspired.
To this end, we invite you to fill in the registration form at the link below, or to pass on the information to any members of teaching staff at your school who might be interested.
“Les vertus du jeu d’échecs : réussite scolaire et ouverture sociale” (google.com) (deadline: Monday 9 October at 12 noon).
We look forward to seeing you there!
