The APEEE is proud to share the success of The European Schools Chess Championship held Saturday 21st March in Evere. This thrilling event brought together 190 players of all ages and skill levels, highlighting the strategic talents and determination of our young participants.
As organiser & teacher Cédric Comhaire noted: “Seeing 190 children so focused, respectful and passionate around the chessboards all afternoon is a great source of pride. Moments like this highlight the beauty and educational value of chess.”
The presence of Myriam Lancelot and Alexia Giannakopoulou, Deputy Directors for Nursery & Primary in Evere and Woluwe respectively, testifies to the importance of the event also for our School community. The organisation of the tournament in Evere provided an opportunity for our young chess players that are currently in Woluwe to have a glimpse at the facilities that will be awaiting them in September.
All participants received a medal and a personalised certificate in recognition of their efforts. Prize winners were celebrated in an awards ceremony, made possible thanks to the generous support of Chessnut, Maison des Échecs, Printed Chess and Your Next Move. We were also honoured to welcome Alina-Stefania Ujupan, Head of Cabinet responsible for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture at the European Commission, who praised the event: “This tournament perfectly illustrates how sport and games support young people’s development, encouraging concentration, respect and self-confidence. Well done to all participants for their commitment and fair play.”
Our sincere thanks go to the school for hosting the event under excellent conditions.
