We love watching films with our kids on a Friday night.
Our children also use our tablets and smartphones to complete educational exercises online.
And thanks to these devices, we can talk to our families, living abroad. When used thoughtfully, technology offers countless benefits.
However, we’re concerned about the risk of these devices on our kids’ brain development, particularly the risks of cyberbullying via social media, and exposure to inappropriate content. That’s why we’ve created this parent-led pact to restrict unsupervised access to online devices.
This pact encourages delaying smartphone ownership until the end of S4, at around age 14, to reduce peer pressure, minimise early exposure to social media, and lower the risk of misuse. In our hearths, we aim to foster healthier digital habits and help our children enjoy a longer, happier, and a more balanced childhood.
Participation is based on trust, and families are asked to inform the organisers if their circumstances change. The pact is anonymous, collects no personal details, and results will only be shared in aggregated form. Interested parents are invited to sign one pact per child.
So… Is this pact anti-technology? Not at all.
This initiative promotes responsible technology use rather than rejecting it outright. Basic mobile phones for essential calls fit perfectly within the pact’s principles, and families are encouraged to explore other positive uses of technology, whether for learning or shared experiences like our Friday film nights. The goal is simply to delay smartphone ownership until children are better equipped to navigate its challenges—and to give them more time to grow without the pressures of social media. That’s a second phase.
